1899
Japanese Buddhist monk Rev. Ekai Kawaguchi visited Nepal during his journey to Tibet in search of sacred Buddhist scriptures. Through his writings, he introduced Nepal to Japan and highlighted the global significance of Lumbini, laying the foundation for early cultural understanding between the two nations.
1955
Nepal and Japan formally established diplomatic relations on 1 September 1956, marking the beginning of a strong and enduring partnership based on friendship, goodwill, and cooperation. This milestone opened new avenues for bilateral engagement and collaboration.
1965–1967
Nepal established its Embassy in Tokyo in 1965, followed by the establishment of the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu in 1967. These diplomatic missions significantly strengthened institutional ties and facilitated closer cooperation across multiple sectors.
