Nepal-Japan Relations

Bilateral Relations

Nepal and Japan share a long-standing relationship built on trust, friendship, and mutual respect. Formal diplomatic ties were established on 1 September 1956, marking the beginning of a strong and enduring partnership. Nepal opened its Embassy in Tokyo in 1965, followed by Japan establishing its Embassy in Kathmandu in 1967.

Over the decades, Japan has remained one of Nepal’s most reliable development partners, contributing significantly to the country’s socio-economic growth. The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, symbolizing decades of cooperation and shared progress.

Historical Connections

The connection between Nepal and Japan dates back to the late 19th century. Japanese Buddhist monk Rev. Ekai Kawaguchi traveled to Nepal in 1899 on his journey to Tibet, later introducing Nepal and the significance of Lumbini to Japan through his writings.

Early educational exchanges further strengthened ties, with Nepali students traveling to Japan in 1902 for higher studies. These interactions laid the foundation for cultural understanding and knowledge exchange between the two nations.

Development Cooperation

Japan has been a key contributor to Nepal’s development since 1954, supporting projects through grants, loans, technical assistance, and volunteer programs. Areas of cooperation include:

  • Infrastructure development (roads, tunnels, hydropower, water supply)
  • Health and education
  • Agriculture and environmental sustainability
  • Human resource development

Major projects such as the Sindhuli Road, Melamchi Water Supply Project, and Kali Gandaki Hydropower Station highlight Japan’s long-term commitment to Nepal’s growth.
